TUC: All public-servants deserve the real living wage

UNIONS will call for a pay rise for public-sector workers at a meeting with MPs tomorrow.

Members of Unite, GMB and the National Education Union are among those that will attend.

The TUC — which will host a rally in the evening — says it wants to see no public-service worker paid less than the real living wage.

It says new money must be found to fund a fair pay rise to prevent pressure on already overstretched public services. And employers, unions and pay review bodies must work out the right pay deal for each sector.

Over the last seven years, the government has restricted public-sector pay rises to less than inflation or not awarded them at all. The wages of nurses, firefighters and other public servants are worth £2,000 less than they were in 2010 because they have not kept up with inflation.

Union members will meet with their MPs from 4.30pm and there is a march near Downing Street from 5.30pm. The TUC will then hold a rally in Parliament Square until 8pm.
