Hernandez's late goal secures West Ham a point against Chelsea
West Ham

Antonio Conte’s Chelsea received a blow to their top-four aspirations after failing to beat London rivals West Ham United.

Cesar Azpilicueta put Chelsea ahead at the interval but a second-half strike from substitute Javier Hernandez saw the teams share the points.

The Spanish defender put Conte’s men ahead on 36 minutes with a close-range finish as West Ham’s backline failed to clear a corner kick.

This followed a period of intense pressure from the home side as they looked to bounce back from last week’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

On a day of high emotion, when club legend Ray Wilkins was remembered, Chelsea’s players would have wanted a display to honour their former star, who passed away in recent days.

Chelsea began the second half brightly and were nearly further ahead through Willian moments after the break. The Brazilian winger came close again minutes later as Chelsea pushed for more goals.

Chelsea were made to pay for their wastefulness when, on 73 minutes, West Ham substitute Hernandez pulled his side level after coming on moments earlier. The former Manchester United frontman combined well with Marko Arnautovic before firing West Ham level with a curling shot.

Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso tested goalkeeper Joe Hart from the edge of the penalty area but the powerful shot was tipped over by the West Ham stopper.

Hart followed it up with another fine save on 87 minutes when he denied substitute Olivier Giroud. It secured the draw for David Moyes’s men.
