HMRC workers on strike Wednesday over office closures

WORKERS at HM Revenue and Customs are on strike tomorrow for the first time over planned office closures.

Members of Civil Service union PCS at International House in Ealing are staging the first of three walkouts over the government’s closure of the office, which is due to take place in 2020-21.

The union is opposed to the closures, which it warns will lead to avoidable job losses and create a poorer service for taxpayers.

Workers will strike for a further three days next week.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “HMRC is struggling to recruit and retain staff. With an unnecessary closure programme and a huge amount of tax uncollected, evaded or avoided, our members demand that their office stays open.

“Our members are taking 24-hour strike action tomorrow for the first time with a planned three-day stoppage next week.

“Ministers need to wake up and start listening to the experts and finally halt this deeply unpopular office closure programme.”
