YOUNG Unite members gathered to discuss challenges in the modern workplace at the weekend.

Members of the union met at their annual Young Members Committee conference in Eastbourne to discuss the future of industrial organising.

Delegates also heard from Unite’s assistant general secretary Steve Turner about the growth of the far right and discussed the ways to combat sexual harassment and the gender pay gap.

North West Unite young member Sarah Doyle told the Star: “Young trade unionists need to provide an alternative narrative to the prevailing one, which is that things are fine as they are.

“Failed neoliberal policies and globalisation have turned estates and working-class areas into post-industrial deserts.

“This means our movement needs to step up to the plate and provide education, solidarity and politicisation for young workers who will be key in taking down capitalism.

“We are the future of trade unionism, but we are also the present and that means organising now.”
