Security forces kill five as Iraq protests escalate
Protesters burning police vehicles in Baghdad

ANTI-GOVERNMENT protests in Iraq left five demonstrators dead yesterday after security forces in Baghdad fired tear gas, rubber bullets and live rounds to disperse the crowds.

Around 350 people were wounded on the first day of a new round of protests demanding jobs, improved services and an end to government corruption.

Security forces were deployed in large numbers in the capital in anticipation of the demonstration, part of a movement that began earlier this month.
