Government interferes in Venezuela gold hearing to recognise Guaido as president

THE government “clearly and unequivocally” recognises former opposition leader Juan Guaido as president of Venezuela, lawyers representing Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told the Supreme Court today.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) intervened in a long-running case concerning about $2 billion (£1.45bn) of assets belonging to the Venezuelan central bank.

Two “rival” boards of Banco Central de Venezuela (BCV) — one appointed by elected Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and another appointed by the US-backed pretender — are battling to secure the release of over $1bn (£800 million) of gold bullion held in the vaults of the Bank of England.
