Campaigners demand end to government's ‘shenanigans’ with Venezuelan gold
VENEZUELAN rights campaigners have demanded justice and an end to Westminster “shenanigans” over sequestering of the country’s gold.
The Supreme Court is considering a case against the Court of Appeal’s recent overturning of an earlier judgement endorsing the British government’s recognition of failed Venezuelan coup leader Juan Guaido as “interim president” of the country. Mr Guaido gave himself the title during an attempt to oust elected President Nicholas Maduro.
The decision would have allowed the Bank of England to release 31 tons of Venezuelan gold from its vaults, worth more than $1bn (£730m), to Mr Guaido.
