Clapton CFC 1-8 FC St. Pauli

ON TUESDAY evening, football fans gathered in their masses at the Old Spotted Dog ground in Forest Gate to witness Clapton CFC take on international visitors FC St. Pauli in a sold-out friendly match.
In fact, the event marked Clapton’s women's first team's record attendance, with 775 supporters flocking to enjoy a game of top-quality football.
The sun shone down but it was a dismal display for the home side, who lost the game 8-1. Their only goal came from a rebound after a penalty which clattered the crossbar, and was eventually tucked away by Marta Boiro in style, followed by an atmospheric roar of celebrations among the home fans.
Despite the result, the club displayed its unity and its commitment to providing a brilliant evening of football where everyone was welcome. Pride flags hung proudly around the ground, a number of families were in attendance, and even furry friends enjoyed themselves on the sidelines!
St Pauli play several tiers higher than Clapton in the Women's Northern Regional League, the third tier of German football, and recently gained promotion after winning the Hamburg Cup. They were tough opponents for the home side but also provided a good challenge, and gave a dominant performance on the pitch.
The match was also special as it was the last game for CCFC head coach Claudio Gomes and some of the players too, who received a moving send off.
The clubs may not align with their level of football, but they do however, align both politically and in spirit, both championing anti-racism, anti-fascism, anti-homophobia and anti-sexism.
Clapton CFC is an entirely fan-owned and fan-run football club. Tickets for the friendly were donation based and £3 was the suggested contribution from supporters, making it a very accessible evening out, particularly in the cost of living crisis. I only see their demand growing after such an electric evening in East London, so if you’re local, keep your eyes peeled and grab yourself a ticket to their next match!
