Luton Town's 2-1 win over Everton a first in top-flight football since '92
Arsenal's Kai Havertz celebrates scoring their side's third goal of the game with team-mates during the Premier League match, Bournemouth, September 30, 2023

LUTON Town celebrated their first win in top-flight football since 1992 thanks to goals from Tom Lockyer and Carlton Morris at Everton on Saturday.

Alfie Doughty’s first-half pieces caused problems for the Everton defence and both Luton goals came from such situations.

Lockyer had a chance from a corner shortly before his goal, and for the second opportunity was in the right place to pressure Ashley Young whose clearance deflected in off him.

“From set-pieces I thought we were a real threat,” said Luton manager Rob Edwards.

“The staff have worked hard on the set-pieces, the hours they’ve put in and the staff deserve their credit today.

“Alfie’s delivery was spot on, and we attacked them well with crisp, clean finishes which was really pleasing.”

The second goal came from a cross drifted to the far post by Doughty from a free kick and finished on the volley by Morris.

As good as Luton’s set pieces were, Everton might wonder where their defence was for that one.

The home side couldn’t muster a fightback, even though Dominic Calvert-Lewin turned in a close-range shot following some penalty box chaos just before halftime.

Sean Dyche introduced a second centre-forward, Beto, midway through the second half.

The summer signing had a couple of chances via headers but, if anything, the dual aerial threat of him and Calvert-Lewin made Everton more predictable.

Crosses were sent in and dealt with more often than not by the Luton defence, and the half-chances that did fall to Everton players weren’t taken.

It was Luton’s first top-flight win of the Premier League era, having been relegated from the First Division the year before it became the Premier League.

Since that last win in 1992, Luton have been all the way down to the Conference Premier, now the National League, and back up again through the Football League to the Premier League.

The win lifted them out of the league’s bottom three for the first time this season.
