WORKERS and campaigners are demanding Andy Burnham put an end to US President Donald Trump’s use of British bases for his war on Iran. 

Activists from around the country are to gather at RAF Fairford on Saturday to tell the new Prime Minister to break from his predecessor and end British complicity in “illegal” and “senseless” US wars.

“Trump’s brutal and reckless illegal war is making the British population a target and pushing the global economy to the brink of recession,” Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament general secretary Sophie Bolt said.

“If Andy Burnham wants to keep the British public safe, he needs to stop dragging Britain deeper into this illegal war on Iran and call time on the use of British bases like Fairford,” she added.

Saturday’s protest at the Gloucestershire air base at 1pm follows reports of a US B-1 bomber departing from Fairford as recently as July.

The warplane went on to attack Iran, prompting the country’s foreign ministry to label Britain an “accomplice” to the US’s war of aggression and suggesting Britain could become a legitimate target as a result.

In response, a government statement made clear its allegiance to US foreign policy would stay unchanged, adding Britain “stands ready 24/7 to defend itself,” including through “air and missile defence” and by “working closely with our Nato allies.”

Exchanges between Iranian and British officials come as the Trump administration continues in its attempt to hide the “hundreds of US military casualties” and an apparent mutiny on a US carrier deployed off the Iranian coast for a record of over 260 days, campaigners said.

Ten British trade unions joined calls for Mr Burnham to revoke the US’s permission to use bases like Fairford for these attacks on Iran, saying this involvement is “deepening the cost of living crisis faced by our members and the British public.”

Maryam Eslamdoust, general secretary of the transport union TSSA, said workers “will not stand by while British bases are used to wage an illegal war on Iran driving up fuel, food and household costs.

“The government cannot claim to tackle the cost of living crisis while allowing Donald Trump to use our bases to pound another Middle Eastern country.”

“Britain must refuse involvement and order an immediate end to the use of our bases,” she added.

And Stroud district councillor Helen Fenton stood in support with demonstrators on Saturday calling on Britain to “stand up to bullying” from the Trump administration.

Stop the War Coalition vice-chair Chris Nineham said the peace campaigners will “be there in numbers on Saturday to tell the new Prime Minister that this collusion has to stop.

“It is deeply dangerous and has next to no support in the country.”

Arjang Alidai of Iranians Against War added that taxpayers want “Britain’s resources directed towards improving the lives of its people, not towards military interventions that bring devastation to ordinary families abroad.

He added: “The path forward lies in diplomacy and mutual respect, not in war, sanctions, and policies that harm working people in Britain while causing suffering in Iran.”

On Saturday, protesters will tie children’s clothes and backpacks to the perimeter fence of the military base on Whelford Road, remembering the US-Israeli bombing of Minab school which killed 120 children.

Ms Bolt explained that “nuclear hypocrisy” is at the heart of the war, saying “the US has sabotaged every opportunity to secure a peaceful way forward over Iran’s nuclear programme.

“Meanwhile nuclear-armed Israel and the US breach international law, continue the genocidal war on the Palestinian people and bomb Iran’s civilian infrastructure.”

“We’ll be sending a clear message to Andy Burnham: Stand up to Trump and send the US bombers home!”

Shel McDonagh, with demonstration organisers Fairford Action, said complicity in US wars is “putting the people of Fairford and the surrounding areas at direct risk of an attack whilst continuing to contaminate the local area.”

She demanded Mr Burnham “immediately halt the use of UK sovereign territory by the US military, instead of allowing the US to commit heinous war crimes from Gloucestershire.

“The US military isn’t here to protect us, it’s here to destroy us,” she said.
