SOUTH AFRICA: A woman was sentenced to life in prison today for attempting to traffic her six-year-old daughter.
Kelly Smith was sentenced by a judge alongside two others, her boyfriend and another man, who also received life sentences.
All three were convicted earlier this month on kidnapping and human trafficking charges. Her daughter remains missing.
PAKISTAN: Security forces, acting on intelligence, raided a militant hideout in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, triggering a shootout that left two police officers and four Pakistani Taliban fighters dead, police said today.
Abdul Jabbar, the police chief in Kashmir, said the killed militants were members of the Pakistani Taliban (TTP). He alleged that the TTP is acting as a proxy for India and were attempting to create a base for future attacks.
SOUTH KOREA: A navy plane crashed during a training flight today, killing all four crew members on board.
The P-3 patrol plane crashed after taking off from its base in the south eastern city of Pohang, the navy said in a statement. It said it had identified the bodies of the four crew members, but had not yet identified the cause of the crash.
There were no immediate reports of civilian casualties on the ground.
THAILAND: The army chiefs of Thailand and Cambodia agreed today to both withdraw from the disputed border area, where a brief clash yesterday killed one Cambodian soldier.
Cambodian troops were conducting a routine patrol along the border when the Thai side opened fire, Cambodia said on Wednesday.
The Thai army said that the Cambodian soldiers entered a disputed area and opened fire when Thai soldiers approached to negotiate.
