ZIMBABWE: At least 44 people drowned after a ferry capsized on Lake Kariba on Tuesday. The boat’s capacity was 90 but a ticket-collector reported he had counted 153 people boarding.

Survivors said the captain had refused pleas to turn back due to high waves, and even to call for help.

SPAIN: Authorities have imposed conditions on viewing this evening’s solar eclipse, clearer in Spain than almost anywhere in Europe, today.

Official viewing sites were set up across “empty Spain,” the sparsely populated interior, where lack of light pollution offered the best views. Access to over 100 other areas was restricted for fear of wildfires.

AFGHANISTAN: Almost two-and-a-half million girls are excluded from secondary education five years on from the Taliban’s takeover, UN education agency Unesco said on Tuesday.

Afghanistan remains the only country in the world banning girls and women from secondary and higher education, Unesco official Hoda Jaberian said, demanding the Afghan government’s “immediate and unconditional” restoration of education rights.
