A SOUTH Wales council announced today that it was planning to become the first in the country to ban adverts for unhealthy foods in public spaces.

Vale of Glamorgan Council said its cabinet would decide next month on a ban to stop foods high in fat, sugar and salt from being promoted at bus stops and on roadside boards.

If approved by cabinet members, the ban would also prevent the products from being marketed on the council’s website.

Explaining the authority’s new five-year plan — Vale 2030 — council leader Lis Burnett said it was aimed to create strong communities, “taking steps to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents and encouraging more active lifestyles.”

The Welsh government has already decided to stop snacks high in sugar, fat and salt from being displayed at tills or the end of aisles from March 2026 and the Senedd decision will also restrict the display of unhealthy foods on websites.
