Initial Israeli election results cast uncertainty across the country
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu waves to his supporters after the first exit poll results for the Israeli parliamentary elections at his Likud party's headquarters in Jerusalem

ISRAEL’s initial parliamentary election results cast uncertainty across the country today, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expected to fail to reach a majority.

With about 90 per cent of the vote counted by this morning, Mr Netanyahu’s Likud party and its ultra-orthodox and far-right allies were expected to fall two seats short of a 61-seat majority.

If a coalition is not formed and a fifth election is sought, Mr Netanyahu would remain a caretaker prime minister while facing a corruption trial and possible confrontation with United States President Joe Biden over Iran.
