Calls for Golden Dawn founder to be extradited after EU waives his immunity from prosecution
European Parliament member Ioannis Lagos, center, walks during a break of a court session on his sentencing in Athens in October 2020

THE European Parliament has waived the immunity from prosecution of Golden Dawn founding member Ioannis Lagos, who is currently serving as a Greek MEP, paving the way for his jailing.

A Greek court sentenced him to 13 years in prison in October after finding him guilty, along with 38 others, of running the fascist party as a criminal organisation.

They were found guilty of a string of serious offences, including the stabbing to death of rapper Pavlos Fyssas and attacks on communists, trade unionists and immigrants.

Of the 693 MEPs who voted today, 658 were in favour of Lagos’s immunity being lifted, 25 were against and 10 abstained.

Following the convictions, 37 were jailed, but neonazi ideologue Christos Pappas, the deputy leader of Golden Dawn, remains on the run.

Lawyer Thanasis Kampagiannis said: “Finally, the European Parliament has voted to lift the immunity of convicted fascist criminal and former Golden Dawn leading figure Ioannis Lagos.

“We demand the Greek state moves immediately to his extradition.”
