Unison demands compensation for the Waspi women
Waspi (Women Against State Pension Inequality) campaigners stage a protest on College Green in Westminster, London, as Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves delivers her Budget in the Houses of Parliament, October 30, 2024

THE refusal by the government to pay compensation to the Waspi women was “a shocking betrayal,” Unison delegates were told today.

Rosie McGregor, from the retired members section, said: “In opposition, Labour fully supported the Waspi campaign but is now refusing to pay the compensation.

“This has forced many into having to make impossible choices.

“They have suffered and have continued to suffer.”

Northern region delegate Pat Heron said she knows that Unison will be seeking a meeting to demand a change to the policy and that compensation is paid.

She said: “There are 1.3 million members of our union and we should all be contacting our MPs.

“We have around 100 Unison MPs. Let's get on to them.”

Ms Heron said the “lack of sympathy towards Waspi women is shocking but is not surprising as society continues to devalue the contribution made by women.”

Jane Doolan from the NEC said it was “deeply disappointing to say the least not to accept the recommendation of the parliamentary ombudsman.

“The government must change its decision and the recommendation of the ombudsman must be accepted.”
