Survivors forced into increasingly cramped spaces as Israeli soldiers push past truce line in eastern Gaza – reports
Palestinians walk through the ruins of destroyed buildings as the sun sets over Gaza City, January 4, 2026

THE ISRAELI military crossed the so-called “yellow line” in eastern Gaza on Sunday, journalists on the ground reported.

The yellow line refers to a map US President Donald Trump shared on social media in October, showing where their forces were due to retreat to during their supposed ceasefire.

Reporting from Gaza City, Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud said: “The ongoing Israeli attacks on the ground, the expansion of the ‘yellow line’ are meant to eat up more of the territory across the eastern part, really shrinking the total area where people are sheltering.

“Everyone is cramped here. The population here not just doubled but tripled in many of the neighbourhoods, given the fact that none of these people is able to go back to their [own].

“It was not until the past few minutes that the sounds of hums, the drones buzzing, faded away, but it had been going on for the past night and all yesterday. Ongoing explosions that could be heard clearly from here.”

Israeli soldiers have killed at least 414 Palestinians and injured 1,145 in daily violations since the truce came into force last year.
