MEN’S BOXING: Sheffield’s unbeaten Dalton Smith is the new WBC super lightweight champion after stopping Puerto Rico’s Subriel Matias in the fifth round of their championship bout this morning in New York.

Smith defied a cut eye caused by a head collision in round three to improve his career record to 19 straight wins.

Matias, who was making the first defence of his world title, slipped to a third loss in 26 fights.

ATHLETICS: Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo won his third consecutive World Championship cross-country title in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday.

He beat Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi over the 6.2-mile course by 18 seconds, with Kenya’s David Simiu Ebenyo in third.

African domination continued in the women’s event, with Kenyan Agnes Jebet Ngetich taking gold more than half-a-minute ahead of Uganda’s Joy Cheptoyek and Ethiopia’s Senayet Getachew.

HORSE RACING: Three horses suffered fatal injuries in separate races at Saturday’s Kempton Park national hunt meeting.

Six-year-old Group One winner Kalif du Berlais broke a shoulder after falling and could not be treated by the on-course vets.

Four-year-old Wertpol also died after a fall, while seven-year-old Peso was pulled up by jockey Jonjo O’Neill at the halfway stage of his race and died soon afterwards.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Featherstone Rovers have been denied a place in this year’s Championship just seven days before their new season was due to begin.

After going into administration in December, the club’s new owners have failed to meet the league’s admission criteria and will be unable to continue their 124-year history.

The West Yorkshire club are three-time Challenge Cup winners and were First Division champions in 1977.
