THIS was a thoroughly deserved and convincing victory for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea players.

What would have made it all the more satisfying was that it comes after an uneven set of results in recent months that have led some to question the lack of depth in some positions in the squad.

Burnley rarely threatened in this largely one-sided affair, leaving their hosts to register their first home league win since early December.

The win came through goals from Jorginho, Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Particularly notable was the performance of Hudson-Odoi, who again showed flashes of brilliance and his ability to impose himself on a match.

It is clear the player’s sharpness is returning following his six-month layoff last year.

The match was all over three minutes after the break when the 19-year-old scored Chelsea’s third when he poked the ball in at the back post after a cross by Cesar Azpilicueta.

Lampard spoke positively about Hudson-Odoi’s form. 

“For him to score in the six-yard box is more exciting to me than 30 yards,” said the Chelsea boss. “It means that he’s prepared to run the extra bit to sprint in there.

“That was the real Hudson-Odoi. It was brilliant for him and we know the player he can be.”

Lampard added: “I thought there were some great passages of play throughout the game, but the overall performance was superb.”

Chelsea’s early dominance was rewarded when they took the lead. The home side earned a penalty after Brazilian winger Willian was brought down by defender Matthew Lowton. Jorginho coolly stroked the spot-kick home.

Chelsea were further ahead on 28 minutes when Abraham rose high to divert a powerful downward header goalwards.

It bounced off the turf and beyond goalkeeper Nick Pope, who should really have done better.

Despite missing N’golo Kante through a hamstring injury, Chelsea rarely needed to be at their best.

By the interval, Lampard’s men were firmly in control. Hudson-Odoi scored early after the break, leaving Sean Dyche’s men with nowhere to go.

The Burnley boss, whose side are now on a run of four straight league defeats that have seen them edge closer to the relegation zone, conceded that he does not see additions to his squad during the transfer window. 

He said: “It is unlikely we will sign anyone but I have confidence in the group that I work with and have always done.”

Chelsea’s next match is at Newcastle on Saturday. Meanwhile, Burnley host Leicester City.
