Protesters to flood Sheffield in solidarity with Gaza
People take part in a national demonstration for Gaza from Russell Square to Whitehall in London, June 8, 2024

PROTESTERS across Yorkshire are set to flood Sheffield on Saturday to demand that Israel end its genocide and stop starving Gaza.

Friends of Al-Aqsa, who are leading the march, have called for protesters to assemble at the Sheffield Amphitheatre at 2pm.

The march through the city is expected to end at around 4pm at Devonshire Green.

A spokesperson for Friends of Al-Aqsa in Sheffield said: “As Israel kills children through starvation and bombs, Yorkshire’s March for Palestine will be a powerful show of solidarity with the Palestinian people.”

“It’s about sending a unified message to the UK government that we oppose its deep complicity in the Israeli war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide by providing arms and diplomatic cover to Israel.”

Protesters are calling on local political leaders, in particular the South Yorkshire Mayor and the Labour leadership of the Sheffield City Council, to take action by divesting in companies funding the genocide.

Israel has killed more than 60,000 people in Gaza since October 2023, although the true number is estimated to be much higher.

Among them are hundreds of health workers who have seen their hospitals reduced to rubble.

Local South Yorkshire NHS health worker Jodie, who only shared her first name, said: “I cannot stand by and watch hundreds of healthcare colleagues in Gaza being targeted and assassinated while on shift.

“I stand against genocide and will be marching on Saturday alongside South Yorkshire nurses and doctors in solidarity with our colleagues in Gaza.”
