DONALD TRUMP won’t stop at Venezuela, campaigners warned as anti-war protesters come out in droves calling on the government to stand against US imperialism in Latin America.
Britons were set to meet at rallies organised by the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign (VSC) as the Morning Star went to press this evening in opposition to the US abduction of President Nicolas Maduro.
MPs and activists are to brand PM Sir Keir Starmer’s government as “completely devoid of morality, common sense or independence from US foreign policy.”
In speeches at Downing Street and in cities around the country, they are expected to hit back at Sir Keir’s “staggering” response to the “blatant and flagrant violation of international law,” which was Saturday’s US military operation on Caracas.
Ahead of the rallies, VSC national secretary Francisco Dominguez said: “I do not know who is next [but] nobody is safe in the neighbourhood, nobody. And this applies to every other country in the rest of the continent.
“It is absolutely shocking, outrageous, that the United States organised these military attacks and extricated the president of the country.
“The intention is to send Venezuela into a vassal state, dominated by the United States. And the oil is the real purpose of it.”
He added: “The significance [of the attacks] for the Caribbean is even worse. [These] are small islands, with the largest one being Cuba.
“What was done to Venezuela can be done to any of them.”
Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who has led the Your Party pressure campaign on Venezuela, is expected to attack the British government’s subservience to US foreign policy.
His new socialist party has also launched a petition with more than 12,500 signatures calling for Sir Keir to speak out against the attack.
The MP will say: “Bombing a sovereign nation and kidnapping its president is a blatant and flagrant violation of international law.
“It is staggering that our PM cannot bring himself to acknowledge something this basic.
“His failure to condemn this illegal act of war typifies a government that is completely devoid of morality, common sense or independence from US foreign policy.
“Many of us were there the last time a Labour PM blindly followed the warmongering whims of a US president. Starmer should learn a valuable lesson — and listen to those who still believe in international law, sovereignty and peace.”
Stop the War convener Lindsey German will tell crowds gathered outside Downing Street: “Trump’s national defence strategy and restatement of the Monroe Doctrine says we can do what we want in our own backyard.
“This is the brutal face of imperialism — it resembles Roman emperors humiliating and parading their captives through the streets.
“What Starmer and the EU leaders are doing is pure appeasement of Trump — they know this is a war crime but say nothing. They want us to think there is nothing we can do — but we can build a mass anti-war movement to stop Trump’s forever wars.”
Other speakers will include writer Tariq Ali, CND general secretary Sophie Bolt, socialist MP Richard Burgon, Transport Salaried Staffs Association general secretary Maryam Eslamdoust, Cuban Solidarity Campaign (CSC) secretary Bernard Regan and National Education Union executive member Louise Regan.
Ahead of the demonstration, a TUC general council statement said the US bombing and abduction of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores is “a clear breach of international law, the UN Charter, and of Venezuela’s sovereignty.”
The statement read: “Subsequent threatening statements made by the US administration against Colombia, Cuba, Mexico and their implied designs on Greenland further undermine peace and stability in the region.
“The TUC firmly believes that the future of any country, including Venezuela, ought to be determined by its people, through peaceful, democratic processes, free from external interference.
“We echo the governments of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Spain, and Uruguay in stating that the aggression marks an ‘extremely dangerous precedent’ and that dialogue is the solution.
“As a permanent member of the UN security council, the UK has a duty to protect international law. We call on the UK government to condemn this blatant violation of international law and to make clear that the UN charter applies to all member states consistently.”
