Met marksman who shot Chris Kaba will learn misconduct hearing decision in July
People demonstrate outside the Old Bailey in central London after a police marksman who fatally shot Chris Kaba has been cleared of his murder, October 21, 2024

THE Metropolitan Police marksman who shot Chris Kaba is expected to know by the end of July whether he will have to face gross misconduct proceedings.

Sergeant Martyn Blake, who shot the 24-year-old in 2022, was cleared of murder at an Old Bailey trial but is waiting to discover whether he will be subject to a disciplinary hearing.

Daniel Simpson, a solicitor for watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), told an inquest hearing today that the body expects to make a decision whether to proceed with the case by July 31.

Kaba, 24, was fatally shot in Streatham, south-east London, in September 2022, after he tried to ram his way past marked and unmarked police cars.

Officers had followed and penned in the Audi that he was driving because it had been linked to three previous firearms incidents in five months.

They were not aware of his identity at the time, but Kaba was a member of one of London’s most violent street gangs and was accused of being involved in two shootings in the six days before he died.

Senior Coroner Dr Julian Morris will also decide in the coming months whether to hold a full inquest into his death.

Matthew Ryder KC, for Kaba’s family, told Southwark Coroner’s Court that his relatives are “extremely keen” for the proceedings to continue.

Speaking at the pre-inquest review hearing, attended by Kaba’s parents Prosper Kaba and Helen Lumuanganu, he said: “On behalf of the family, we are extremely concerned about the length of time that has gone on since Mr Kaba’s death.

“There are very powerful reasons why this inquest should be resumed, and if it is resumed it should be as soon as possible.”
