PEERS have inflicted a total of 20 defeats on the government’s Illegal Migration Bill, which aims to tackle the small boats crisis.
On Wednesday evening, the House of Lords imposed a series of further changes to the Tory plans to stop asylum-seekers using small boats to cross the English Channel, including imposing a legal duty on ministers to create safe and legal routes by which refugees can reach Britain.
Other changes included reinstating the right of appeal against age assessments for migrants claiming to be children and bolstering measures to counter people-smugglers.
