LABOUR should “never be forgiven” for failing to stand up to rampant Tory Covid fraud, bakers’ union president Ian Hodson said today.
Delegates at its annual conference passed motions calling for the Tory Party to refund the public on the “scandalous” amount forked out on the NHS Test and Trace app.
Around £35 million was spent on the app in the first year (2020/21), with a total of £37 billion allocated to the overall programme over two years.
The Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) also called for a public inquiry into the “fraud from the top down” exploitation of the Covid crisis.
MPs on the public accounts committee in 2021 said that the NHS Test and Trace programme had “no clear impact” despite the government setting aside £37bn on it for over two years.
Mr Hodson said: “The Tories chose their mates over public health.
“It was a political crisis that failed to protect us.
“[Labour] failed us and Covid was a red line … because they wanted to stand aside.”
BFAWU disaffiliated from Labour in 2021.
