Gatwick disruption over half term as Unite announces strikes

GATWICK aircraft refuellers and baggage handlers will strike during the May half term, Unite announced today.

Flights at the transport hub will be cancelled or delayed as a result, said the union.

Redline Oil Services refuellers will strike from May 16 to 20 and May 23 to 27, after rejecting a pay offer of 3.5 per cent over two years.

More than 100 Red Handling workers will strike for four consecutive Sundays starting on May 11.

Red Handling is accused of failing to pay pensions and wages on time and not allowing staff to take proper breaks.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: ”Workers at both companies have had enough of poor pay offers and appalling treatment from their employers and it is little surprise they are taking strike action.”

Red Handling has also been accused of union busting tactics, such as employing agency workers to cover the last series of strikes.

The companies and Gatwick have been contacted for comment.
