Readers are digging deep – and keeping the wheels a-turning – for the Morning Star’s appeal
You’ve raised: £54,082  We need: £35,918 by the end of August

COMRADES, are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin.

Last week I asked for a big uptick in donations. But I nearly fell off my saddle when an anonymous reader sent in a whopping ten grand in support of the Pedal4Progress cycling fundraiser!

This amazing donation helped push my weekly postbag to a record-breaking £20,855.

With 36 grand left to raise by the end of August, things look set for an exciting mountain-top finish.

But be warned: many a race has been lost because of complacency.

A supporter in Yorkshire who sent in £50 gets what I’m banging on about: “It was either you or a haircut for Keir Starmer,” he quipped.

Did you hack off your own hair during lockdown or did you hang with the hippies in Hackney Wick?

Have you swapped the train for a pair of trainers or the public bar for handlebars?

Are Richard Branson and Tim Martin managing to keep their yachts afloat without your hard-earned lolly?

Drop me a line… and don’t forget to send me your fares, beer money, or a lock of your hair.

“The Morning Star is my political compass and I’d be lost without it,” said a West Ealing reader sending 50 quid.

A reader from Southampton gave £60 after my nod to William Brown “keeping those wheels a-turning” got her singing along at home.

And a prof in Milton Keynes came good on his promise to send me £2,000.

From Unite BAE Systems branch came £200 “for the only national daily with the interests of the working class at heart.”

Thumbs up to the reader who sent in £120. An elbow bump to the 501 Club member who returned their £100 winnings.

And a big online hug to the dozens of other supporters who sent fivers, tenners, twenties and more through our website or bank transfer.

Comrades, this year we celebrate our 90th anniversary, so please put a scowl of the face of every capitalist and slip a cheque inside a birthday card and pop it in the post to me.
