AN EMERGENCY protest was called today to stand in solidarity with the people of Minneapolis after a second killing during US President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.
Protesters are to gather at 6pm in Trafalgar Square in central London calling to “Stop Ice Murders.”
Campaigners are urging Britons to “Fight Trumpism” around the world after the killing of Alex Pretti by US immigration enforcement on Saturday, just two weeks after the Ice killing of Renee Good, which sent shockwaves around the world.
Organisers Stand Up To Racism have also called for people across the country to join demonstrations, including in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Liverpool, Sheffield, Derby, Oxford, Cambridge and Bristol.
The emergency meeting also follows the Ice detention of a five-year-old boy last Friday as he was on his way to school in Minnesota.
British campaigners highlighted the “spectacular numbers” of people who took to the streets across the northern US state in response to the increasingly violent action by immigration officers.
Stand Up To Racism also pointed to the cosy relationship between Britain’s far right and US authoritarian policies, as Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has expressed his admiration for Ice.
Mr Farage has also previously indicated interest in using similar force on people in Britain.
Stand Up To Racism co-convener Sabby Dhalu called for strong opposition to the “Gestapo-style police” Ice and for “solidarity with Americans protesting against this vile racism.
“Events in the US should also remind us of what could happen here in Britain if the rightward drift continues,” she added.
NASUWT general secretary Matt Wrack said: “We are horrified by recent events in Minneapolis.
“We send our condolences and solidarity to the families and friends of Renee Good, a writer and mother and of Alex Pretti, who was a nurse and a union member.”
