THE SENEDD and Welsh government must publicly condemn the US bombing of Venezuela and call for the return of President Nicolas Maduro, campaigners demanded today.
Cymru Cuba, the Welsh arm of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign, is set to stage a demonstration at the Aneurin Bevan Statue in Cardiff tonight to warn the Welsh government not to be complicit.
Calling it a “blatant violation of international law,” the group’s Dominic MacAskill was to speak on the shared plights of Venezuelans, Cubans and the entire Latin American region.
Ahead of the demonstration, he said: “Silence is complicity with this blatant imperialist act of aggression.
“Cymru Cuba calls on the Welsh government and all members of the Senedd to publicly condemn the US bombing; demand a halt to all military operations against Venezuela; the return of President Maduro and oppose any further escalation that threatens catastrophic consequences for the region.”
Mr MacAskill added: “The attack poses a threat far beyond Venezuela’s borders.
“US military aggression destabilises the entire Caribbean and Latin America, endangers shipping lanes and energy supplies, and raises the risk of wider regional conflict.
“It also constitutes a direct threat to Cuba. US attacks on Venezuela are inseparable from Washington’s long-standing objective of isolating, economically suffocating and politically destabilising both Venezuela and Cuba.”
He also described the US air bombing of Caracas a “grave and dangerous escalation,” which he said marks a change for Washington, that “has moved beyond economic warfare, covert destabilisation and proxy operations” to embrace “open military assault.”
