Cuban solidarity flotilla welcomed by campaigners

THE Cuba Solidarity Campaign (CSC) in Britain has welcomed the launch of an international flotilla to break the US siege and provide critical aid for the Cuban people.

A new international coalition of movements, trade unionists, grassroots organisations and humanitarian groups announced today the Nuestra America Flotilla, a seaborne mission to deliver urgently needed food, medicine and essential supplies to communities facing acute shortages amid an intensifying US siege.

The flotilla will set sail next month across the Caribbean carrying humanitarian aid and volunteers in an act of direct civilian solidarity.

Organisers say the mission responds to a rapidly deteriorating situation.

Tightened US sanctions have disrupted fuel imports, grounded flights, and forced emergency conservation measures nationwide — straining hospitals, transport and everyday life.

The initiative draws inspiration from the Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza, which mobilises international civil society to challenge Israel’s siege by sea.

Several organisers of the Cuba mission previously participated in the Gaza effort.

Flotilla co-organiser David Adler said that when “governments enforce collective punishment, ordinary people have a responsibility to act.”

“The consequences of the siege are measured in empty pharmacies, cancelled flights, and families without power or fuel,” he said.

“This flotilla is a simple promise: you are not alone.”

CSC said Cuba “needs and deserves the broadest possible international support” at a time when the Trump administration is “attempting to starve the Cuban people into submission.”

It said in a statement to the Morning Star: “We warmly welcome the Nuestra America Flotilla and the growing global coalition coming together to deliver life-saving aid and shine a spotlight on the brutal impact of US policy.

“Solidarity with Cuba also means recognising what Cuba gives to the world.

“Despite decades of economic warfare, Cuba has sent tens of thousands of doctors, nurses and health workers to communities devastated by war, disaster and disease — often to places others will not go.”

The CSC is supporting the flotilla alongside its Cuba Vive Medical Appeal, which has surpassed its £250,000 end-of-year fundraising target and continues to send urgently needed medical and food aid from Britain.

Another emergency shipment leaves this month, and donations can be made via www.cuba-solidarity.org.uk.

MP Jeremy Corbyn also praised the action, saying: “People across the world must stand with the Cuban people, oppose these punitive policies, and demand the right of every nation to live, develop, and determine its own future free from intimidation.”
