Climate activists blockade offices of Russia-linked fossil fuel shipping firm in Glasgow

CLIMATE activists blockaded the Glasgow offices of a “Russia-linked” global fossil fuel shipping firm today in solidarity with Ukrainians.

Four protesters from the Glasgow Calls Out Polluters campaign group locked themselves to bikes and another to a gas canister, while three sat on the floor to block the gates of gas shipping giant Seapeak’s office.

The group said they were carrying out the action at Seapeak’s Glasgow HQ to demand an end to gas shipping which they say is fuelling Russia’s war on Ukraine.

The £4.7 billion firm describes itself as having “one of the largest fleets of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vessels,” in the world.

Campaigners claim the Glasgow office co-ordinates gas tanker ships across the world, including in the Russian Arctic.

The activists displayed banners reading “Stop shipping war” and “Make renewables not war” as they blockaded the office on today morning.

Activist Scott Tully said: “We are demonstrating the link between fossil fuel activity in Glasgow and Russia’s war on Ukraine, though Seapeak also operates in other regions experiencing violence.

“We need a root-and-branch shake-up of our economy, towards renewable energy for peace and away from cynical war profiteers like Seapeak.”

The group said it launched the action after Extinction Rebellion Ukraine put out an open letter appealing for global divestment from fossil fuel firms that feed “Putin’s military machine and the climate crisis.”

Seapeak said it was not subject to any sanctions imposed by the British government, the US or the European Union.

“We continue to monitor regulations closely,” a spokesperson said.
