NEARLY 150 low-paid workers across various employers will hold a simultaneous three-day strike this month to “demand dignity, equality and respect” at work, their union United Voices of the World (UVW) has announced.
Cleaners, carers and concierge employees will down tools on June 13, 15 and 20 as part of 11 public and private sector disputes, the union said.
Sites involved include an Amazon warehouse in Dartford, the prestigious London School of Economics (LSE) and the Department for Education (DfE).
UVW general secretary Petros Elia said: “That these strikes have been called simultaneously is testament to both our members’ resilience and determination and the greed and callous disregard of their employers.
“Our members’ demands across all sites are affordable and reasonable and we call upon this group of employers to do the right thing before picket lines form.”
He urged the union movement to stand with the 145 workers to “help them fight and win.”
The employees are demanding a proper pay rise to cope with the crippling cost of living as food inflation rises at its fastest rate in nearly half a century.
Workers at LSE also want their lawful entitlement to annual leave pay and amended contracts, while DfE staff are calling for parity with Civil Service benefits.
Their union colleagues at south London’s exclusive Streatham and Clapham private high school want full sick pay and an end to outsourcing. Walkouts are also due to hit the Sage nursing home in north London, luxury apartments West End Quays and marketing firm Ogilvy.
