Charles Windsor to be met with protest in Durham as royal funding increases by £45m
King Charles III meeting representatives from the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance in the gardens of the ambassador's residence Villa Wolkonsky, Rome, April 10, 2025

ANTI-monarchy campaign group Republic will stage a string of protests demanding an end to the institution as royal funding increases by more than £45 million.

Protesters are set to rally as the King arrives for a Maundy service at Durham Cathedral on April 17.

Rallies are also planned on Republic Day in Trafalgar Square on May 10 and Trooping the Colour on June 14.

Republic has called for the Sovereign Grant to be scrapped after it jumped by more than 53 per cent when it came into effect last week.

Graham Smith of Republic said: “The Sovereign Grant is increasing by £45 million pounds, just when services and support are being cut and household bills are rising.

“Charles is continuing to exploit the Duchies [of Lancaster and Cornwall, which provide money for the King and his heir] for tens of millions in profit at the expense of charities and public services.”

“The abuse of public money by the royals is shocking. And in return he patronises people by giving out £5 in Maundy money.”

“Britain isn’t a nation of royalists. That’s what Republic will be showcasing over the next few months through these protests and campaigns.”
