MORE than 25,000 people have signed a petition in support of rapper and campaigner Lowkey after a pro-Israel organisation called on Spotify to delete his music.
Dozens of celebrities, including fellow rappers Wretch 32 and Ghetts, Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters, model Anwar Hadid and DJ Charlie Sloth have also leapt to Lowkey’s defence.
In an open letter to Spotify, they wrote: “The campaign against Lowkey is designed to silence Palestinians and their supporters.
“Anti-Palestinian censorship is now reaching into the artistic realm. Today, Lowkey; tomorrow, who is next?”
The petition against attempts to “censor” the rapper had already gained over 25,000 signatures by this morning, less than 48 hours after its launch.
The campaign against Lowkey, a lifelong Palestinian rights activist, has been initiated by the We Believe in Israel group, which describes itself as a “UK grassroots network of people united in believing in the right of the state of Israel to live in peace and security.”
In a petition launched on March 24, the group called for the streaming giant to remove some of the rapper’s tracks, especially his 2010 song “Long Live Palestine, Part 2,” branding them “extreme anti-Israel content.”
On Wednesday, the group said that its petition had raised 1,000 signatures, far fewer than the tens of thousands who have now signed in support of Lowkey.
Other figures who have stood up for the rapper include film director Ken Loach, prominent academics Noam Chomsky, Ilan Pappe and Yara Hawari and US philosopher and political activist Cornel West.
