Altrincham anti-racists to unite against far-right hate

A UNITY rally tomorrow will bring together local people, parents, elected councillors and trade unions at a rally to celebrate multiculturalism in the English town of Altrincham, Trafford, Greater Manchester.

The action has been organised as part of nationwide rallies in response to the rise of far-right migrant hate and the targeting of accommodation housing migrants.

It comes as the government’s “one-in-one-out” deal with France today saw a second asylum-seeker removed from Britain.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy claimed today that the deal serves as an “immediate deterrent” to small boat crossings.

But hundreds of migrants tried to cross the Channel today, with one man seen wading through the water towards an inflatable dinghy with a baby on his shoulders at Gravelines beach, north-east Calais.

Greater Manchester Stand Up to Racism co-chairwoman Nahella Ashraf stressed the need for people in Altrincham to come together and show they are the majority.

“Last weekend’s shocking display of hate in London was the largest far-right demonstration in the history of this country,” she said

“As the majority, we must not allow the voices of hate to seep into our communities.”

Salford Unison assistant branch secretary Alison Campbell says women across north-west England are refusing to let the far-right hijack their safety and spread hate.

“They don’t speak for us — we stand for unity, not division,” she said.

And Greater Manchester Unison’s transport branch secretary Tony Wilson said: “The real enemy isn’t people fleeing war, persecution, or poverty.

“Refugees are not to blame for the pressure on our services or for the cost-of-living crisis.

“The real [enemies] are the billionaires like Elon Musk who profit from division while ordinary people struggle.”

The rally will assemble at 1pm outside Everyman Theatre.
