Jerusalem: Communists slam Israel’s ‘aggressive crackdown’

THE Lebanese Communist Party (LCP) has accused regional governments of “complicity” with Israel’s “aggressive and racist” Jerusalem security crackdown.

The LCP political bureau released a statement on Monday condemning the “aggressive security measures in Jerusalem” and that the two-week standoff at the al-Aqsa mosque in occupied East Jerusalem — Islam’s third-holiest site — “confirms the racist nature of the zionist occupation.”

The statement said the occupation “feeds off the divide among the Palestinian people, the silence of the Arab regimes and their complicity with the occupation.”

And that “the zionist enemy has benefited from the results of the last Riyadh summit” — May’s meeting of Arab governments in the Saudi capital where US President Donald Trump was the guest of honour.

The LCP said Israel saw the summit as a green light for aggressive security measures as a “fulfilment of its institutionalised colonial policies.”

The party praised Palestinian “steadfastness” in protests that forced a U-turn from Tel Aviv.

It urged “all national forces and movements, Palestinian and Arab, to support this steadfastness and maintain the growth of the Intifada.”

The LCP also hailed last week’s victory by the Lebanese army and Hezbollah guerillas over al-Qaida-affiliated Hetesh extremists, who had invaded Arsal in the Beqaa valley from Syria.

Under a ceasefire deal struck on Friday, around 9,000 militants and their families will be evacuated to Syria’s Idlib province.

The LCP saluted “all the martyrs who arose in the battle” and called for nearby areas held by Isis to be liberated.
