GMB members at the Cameronbridge distillery of alcoholic drinks transnational Diageo have voted overwhelming for strike action to resist job cuts.

Bosses at the Fife distillery, which produces whisky, gin, and vodka, have proposed axing 10 of the 72 operators’ posts at the site as part of a huge global redundancy programme. 

But workers accuse executives of failing to properly consult on the plans and 75 per cent of them have now backed strike action.

Announcing the ballot result, GMB Scotland organiser Daniel Reid said: “The company may believe a consultation can only involve one voice, their own, but our members do not.

“There has been no genuine attempt to listen to their concerns about the impact of these proposals or proposals to ease that impact.

“The result of this ballot is no surprise and reflects the rising anger of our members and the urgent need for the company to return to talks prepared to engage with their concerns.”

A Diageo statement said: “We are disappointed by the outcome of the ballot and remain committed to engaging constructively.”
