From Frazier in Manila to Wardley in Manchester, the decision to stop a fight remains boxing’s greatest moral test, writes JOHN WIGHT
DANNY ROHL has been given assurances about his future by the Rangers board amid fans’ anger about the post-split capitulation.
The Light Blues have suffered three successive defeats for the first time since 2000 and are guaranteed to finish third in the Premiership, while Celtic, who beat their Old Firm rivals 3-1 on Sunday and leaders Hearts fight for the title.
It is another trophyless campaign for the Govan club and many Gers supporters want the German coach, who took over as boss in October, replaced for the new season.
Rohl insisted there was “no question” about him still being in situ after the summer and when asked outright if he had been given assurance by chairman Andrew Cavenagh and the rest of the Ibrox board, he said: “Yes. I think the last 48 hours, there was unbelievable support from the board. Everyone around me sees a lot of positive things, but we are also critical of ourselves. I think there’s no question mark.
“The most important thing is it is what I have said many times, we have to take all the information and what we need into the new season.
“I think you can imagine, with [James] Tav [Tavernier leaving after 11 years], we lose the captain and it means for us, this is a big signal as well.
“We need new leaders, more leaders for the dressing room, to set our standards that we want on the training pitch, in difficult moments in the game.
“I think this is crucial. This is a great opportunity to work on this.
“Yesterday, conversations again with the club and you can really trust me, I’m very clear, especially also after the last three weeks, what we need to be top, top, top.”
