Royal Fleet Auxiliary to begin strike action
Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship, RFA Stirling Castle, in Leith, April 11, 2024

RMT seafarers in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) began strike action today and will again on May 13 following a dispute over pay, transparency and concerns over compliance with the national minimum wage.

Members resorted to taking industrial action after RFA management failed to bring forward solutions to address the lack of clarity over how pay is calculated, despite seafarers routinely having to work up to 12 hours a day.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said members opted for strike action “after years of frustration over pay, conditions and a lack of transparency around wages.

“There remains no clear formula setting out how pay is calculated against the hours actually worked, and there are serious concerns that some members’ pay could effectively fall below the legal minimum once those hours are properly accounted for.

“Despite continued discussions, no acceptable offer has been made, and unless serious proposals are brought forward, our members remain determined to continue their industrial campaign.”

An MOD spokesperson said: “We recognise the decision by some members of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary RMT union in favour of industrial action and we are continuing to collaborate closely with all stakeholders, including trade unions.

“Royal Fleet Auxiliary seafarers are highly valued specialists who play a critical role in supporting defence operations around the world.

“We remain committed to working constructively with the maritime trade unions to reach a resolution that reflects the vital contribution of RFA personnel, but will not provide further comment until these negotiations conclude.”
