THE RMT said today it would oppose racism “wherever it rears its ugly head” in a message of solidarity to Sir Sadiq Khan after it was revealed he was the primary target of a foiled mass shooting.
Alfie Coleman was found guilty on Thursday of planning the attack on a mosque and the London mayor, before he was caught by an MI5 sting operation.
The 21-year-old was apprehended as he attempted to buy a semi-automatic pistol, five magazines and 200 rounds of ammunition.
RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said: “Wherever fascism and racism rears its ugly head, our union will be there to oppose it.
“In an environment where anti-Muslim sentiment has flourished, one of our leading elected politicians was a target for terrorism.
“When any community or democratically elected politician in Britain is targeted because of their race or religion, it is our duty to stand together in unity, regardless of any differences we have in political outlook.
“The organised working class and trade union movement always opposes division and hatred.”
Mr Coleman was found guilty at an Old Bailey retrial, during which he was said to have been consuming extremist far-right material online from the age of 14, including a neonazi text he had downloaded on his iPad.
The court heard that he had compiled a hate list, describing former colleagues and shoppers at his part-time Tesco job as “race traitors” for being in relationships with non-white partners.
He was caught when undercover officers engaged with Coleman on an encrypted chat when he was attempting to buy the weapons.
A “manifesto” the young neonazi wrote in his diary included a list of identified potential targets, which included a mosque and the London mayor, who is Muslim.
