TEACHERS at Llantwit Major Comprehensive School took the 10th day of strike action today in response to cuts to planning, preparation and assessment time.
NEU Cymru and NASUWT Cymru members at the school have taken industrial action at different times, but both unions’ members went on strike today.
The dispute between the unions and the school’s senior management was taken to Acas but attempts to resolve it have so far failed.
Tensions have risen further after the school told parents they did not know why the unions were striking, despite being in talks with them for over a year.
NASUWT Cymru national executive member Sharron Daly said: “The school was told what the dispute was about in the Acas meetings.
“We have also carefully chosen the dates of our strike action to avoid any exams that pupils will be sitting, but our strike will continue unless the school leadership gets back around the table.”
Ms Daly was also barred from a redundancy consultation meeting with Vale of Glamorgan Council officials and school managers about job cuts.
She said: “The union cannot allow an employer to choose which union representative can attend meetings and they have to sit down and talk to us.
“I have been elected by NASUWT members in south Wales to represent them and the council and school need to accept that.”
NEU Cymru senior organiser Daniel Many said: “We call on the employer to get back around the table and find a resolution to this issue.”
The NASUWT has a further six days of strike action planned and is considering reballoting its members.
The Vale of Glamorgan Council was asked to comment.
