LEFT MPs expressed hope for the reunification of Ireland ahead of the 110th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising tomorrow.

Labour MP John McDonnell, Diane Abbott MP, as well as Your Party’s Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, paid tribute to the landmark moment in the Irish struggle for independence.

Ms Abbott said: “Anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism are the only reasonable positions to take for anyone who is for democracy and against oppression.

“Unfortunately, Ireland is the oldest colony in the world, but hopefully that is about to change.”

Mr McDonnell said: “We face a real prospect of seeing realised the dream of generations of Irish men and women of a united Ireland. 

“The issue for us now is to ensure that unification realises the aspirations of [James] Connolly of an Irish socialist republic.”

Communist Party general secretary Alex Gordon said: “Today, the working class in Britain should support Ireland’s unification as a basis for peace.”
