WELSH Labour launched its housing pledge today to deliver 100,000 homes over the next 10 years, including 40,000 low-carbon rental homes, but it was overshadowed by the Peter Mandelson scandal.
Party leader Eluned Morgan visited a housing development in Cardiff and said: “Welsh Labour has an ambitious, but affordable plan to deliver 100,000 new homes over the next decade.
“Despite global challenges, we are on track to have built 20,000 new affordable or social homes in this Senedd term, way above the equivalent rate in England.”
After 27 years in power the First Minister said it was also proposing to reform the planning process, claiming it would supercharge the housing sector in Wales.
“Only Welsh Labour has the experience, and track record to deliver the housing revolution we require.
“Do not risk the inexperience, and housing hypocrisy of the other parties on May 7,” Ms Morgan said.
The Welsh government has invested £2 billion to deliver some 20,000 homes for rent in the social sector this Senedd term.
Ms Morgan also pointed to the Welsh government’s Help to Buy Wales scheme, helping more people buy a home, and said it will expand the scheme if re-elected.
But the housing launch was overshadowed by the row engulfing Sir Keir Starmer over the appointment of Lord Peter Mandelson as US ambassador.
Ms Morgan said: “The key thing for me is to recognise, for people to realise, that this is not an election about Keir Starmer.
“He’s not on the ballot paper, neither is Nigel Farage.”
The First Minister is in danger of losing her Senedd seat, with opinion polling putting Welsh Labour in third place, behind Reform and Plaid Cymru.
