The Morning Star 2026 Conference
Sport in brief: March 25, 2026

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Gateshead climbed out of the National League relegation zone on Tuesday night after they continued their superb recent form with a 3-1 win over second-top York City at the International Stadium.

The Tynesiders have now taken 21 points from their last 10 games and moved above Brackley, who dropped into the bottom four following their 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Braintree Town.

WOMEN’S CRICKET: Georgia Voll scored her maiden Twenty20 century from just 52 balls as Australia gained a 40-run Duckworth-Lewis-Stern win over the West Indies in Kingstown, St Vincent, on Tuesday.

Chasing 212 to win the Windies reached 61-3 from 10 overs before rain curtailed the match.

Australia won the three-match series 3-0 and remain ranked as the world’s best short-format team, five places above the West Indies.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Salford will be without head coach Mike Grady for Friday night’s bottom-of-the-table Championship clash with Halifax following his resignation.

Grady began the role at the recently re-formed phoenix club days before the season started in January, leading the club to two wins in their eight Championship and Challenge Cup games.

Halifax are rock-bottom of the league following a 12-point deduction for entering liquidation.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: The European World Cup play-off semi-finals kick off tomorrow evening with Northern Ireland in Bergamo to take on four-time champions Italy.

The winners will face either Wales or Bosnia-Herzegovina for a place at this summer’s finals. If Ireland win in Czechia they will be up against Denmark or North Macedonia.

Thursday’s other matches see Turkey play Romania, Sweden at Ukraine, Poland against Albania and Slovakia versus Kosovo.
