Sport in brief: March 23, 2026

NETBALL: Loughborough Lightning still top the Super League with the only 100 per cent record after Samantha Wallace-Jordan shot 30 goals in their 66-58 win at London Mavericks. 

Manchester Thunder are second following their 58-48 win at bottom of the table Birmingham with Nottingham Forest third despite their 73-63 loss against defending champions London Pulse. 

The Dragons beat Leeds 62-51 for their first win of the season.

 

SPEEDWAY: The new British season officially kick-started on Sunday afternoon when Josh Pickering scored 13+1 points for Scunthorpe as they saw off current champions Redcar 50-40 in their BSN Series northern group fixture. 

Ace Pijper and Jason Edwards both bagged eight points for Redcar. The return match takes place next Friday before both teams take on Workington for a place in the national semi-finals.

 

ICE HOCKEY: Reigning champions Belfast Giants still top the Elite League by eight points despite losing one leg of their double-header against Glasgow. 

Second-placed Nottingham only won one of their two matches against Sheffield while Cardiff in third beat Dundee 3-0 and 8-1. 

Manchester saw off Guildford 4-1 and won 4-0 in Fife, who were also thumped 7-3 at Coventry. Guildford beat Coventry 4-1 in the weekend’s other match.

 

BASKETBALL: Kameron Mogusty hit 21 points, made seven assists and six rebounds as London Lions came from eight points down at half-time to beat Manchester 83-74 in Sunday’s Super League Cup final. 

Manchester also lost out in the women’s final as Tiarra East netted 23 points for the Sheffield Hatters in their 90-71 victory. 

It completed an early season double for Sheffield who also won the Betty Codona Trophy in February.
