Solidarity with socialist Cuba is our priority, say Britain’s Communists

‘Solidarity with the Cuban people’s revolution is our overriding priority,’ international secretary KEVAN NELSON told the Communist Party’s political committee on Wednesday

CUBA’S economic and energy crisis is acute as the US tightens its oil embargo, and Cuba’s health minister recently warned the US blockade is putting lives at risk.

Yet, in the past 24 hours both Canada and the Community of Caribbean nations (Caricom) have pledged important material and political support to Cuba.

The immediate question facing all those who defend Cuban socialism against US imperialism is how we show unity and practical solidarity with Cuba’s government and people.

The Communist Party calls to redouble support for Cuba Solidarity Campaign’s Cuba Vive! medical aid appeal, which recently reached £250,000.

2026 is already a year of crisis, imperialist intervention and political transition in Latin America as US imperialism seeks to establish indirect colonial rule in Venezuela.

We demand the unconditional release of President Maduro and Cilia Flores from illegal US detention and the end US interference. US control over Venezuelan oil supply, distribution and commerce, summary termination of oil exports to Cuba and dismissal of Cuban medical brigades, support the analysis of the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV).

In Colombia, the Historic Pact party of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, which includes the Communist Party of Colombia, is on course to win more seats in elections on March 8 and May 31. Historic pact Presidential candidate Ivan Cepeda is currently leading the polls for Colombia’s presidential election.

However, in Chile hard right populist, Jose Antonion Kast takes office as President on March 11 replacing Gabriel Boric.

The world’s most ignored war in Sudan has now lasted over 1,000 days and the humanitarian impact in terms of displacement, starvation and death is unsurpassed in any current international conflict.

The Sudanese Communist Party is calling for an immediate cessation of the war and the unconditional opening of humanitarian corridors to create the conditions for a resolution of the national crisis without military participation in government.

The Communist Party of Britain reissued its call to “stop the war and start the peace” made when Russia’s Special Military Operation began in Ukraine on February 22 2022. We welcome the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) call for “de-escalating the conflict and ending the bloodshed” in Europe’s long-running war.

A US-promoted peace plan in late 2025 raised hopes of a diplomatic solution between Russia, Ukraine, and the US and trilateral talks in Geneva continue next week. The fog of state censorship and propaganda from UK media seeks to obscure prospects for peace.

Western European (Nato) powers have made strident calls for “total defeat of Russia,” increased funding and supply of weapons for Ukraine and indulged in fantasy talk of a “coalition of the willing.”

Britain’s political establishment and liberal elite are united in their fear of peace in Ukraine. What they fear more than war is the absence of war, which would undermine their attempted justification for enormous increases in military expenditure, said Mr Nelson.

In Iran, US military build-up threatens to derail negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme in Geneva. Communists oppose British participation or support for any US-led military action against Iran.

Protests in Iran continue, notably in universities. Criticism of the Iranian regime and support for the democratic rights of the Iranian people and opposition to US military attack are not mutually exclusive.

The drive to war is the responsibility of the US government, which withdrew from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear deal in in 2018 and intervened in the 12-day Iran-Israel war in June 2025 by attacking Iranian nuclear facilities.

On February 19, the so-called “Gaza Board of Peace” held its first meeting. Its grotesque composition and mission statement became clear. It is a Frankenstein’s monster of global diplomacy and a vehicle for private-sector interests.

Britain and other states who recognise Palestinian statehood have not engaged with the Board of Peace. The Communist Party fully supports Palestinian opposition to this neo-colonial project for Gaza and insists that UNSC resolution 2803 and Trump’s 20-point plan be rejected along with any peace plan not based on the freely given consent of the Palestinian people.

The British ruling-class crisis of representation has morphed into a crisis of constitution and governance. Revelations about the corruption and sleaze of the con artist formerly known as Prince Andrew and Labour Party grandee, Lord Peter Mandelson (both now under police investigation) speak to the systemic corruption of capitalism and the revolving door between Civil Service, politics and corporate lobbyists, privatisation, endemic bribery, corruption and nepotism which sustains the capitalist political system.

The orgy of pious revelations and “benefit of hindsight” repudiations of the former prince in the House of Commons recalled Lenin’s words on the 30th anniversary of Marx’s death in 1913: “Champions of reforms and improvements will always be fooled by the defenders of the old order until they realise that every old institution, however barbarous and rotten it may appear to be, is kept going by the forces of certain ruling classes.”
