Matt Peet promises more to come from Wigan despite Hull win
Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet ahead of the Betfred Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford, Manchester, October 11, 2025

WIGAN boss Matt Peet said there was more to come from his team after they overpowered Hull 34-6 at the Brick Community Stadium to move top of the Super League table.

Sam Walters and Zach Eckersley each scored to set the early tone before Sam Eseh got Wigan’s third try after only 19 minutes.

Jai Field with two and Bevan French also crossed the line before Harvie Hill got Hull on the board, scoring against his former club late on.

Afterwards Peet said: “This time of year you’re pleased with the two points as everyone is looking for form, no-one’s settled into a rhythm yet. You’re confident in the preparation you’ve done, you’re just hoping to get the result.

“Ultimately, I thought it was a good result as was large parts of the performance. I know there is more in us.”

On intensity, Peet said: “You’re just trying to keep the intensity high through the middle period. We’ve seen in the past that Hull are a team who have patches of dominance, so the aim was to keep the energy high through that section.”

Hull coach John Cartwright reflected that his team were beaten by the better side.

“We were up against it from the word go,” he said. “They were very good and we weren’t so good.

“Games of rugby league are won through the middle of the field, by gaining ascendancy through the middle of the field — sometimes it’s a stalemate, and sometimes a side just gets on top.”

Castleford coach Ryan Carr said he thought his team had taken a step backwards after they were beaten 24-12 by Toulouse.

Reubenn Rennie scored a double for the French side while Mathieu Jussaume was also on the scoresheet.

“We’ve been building as a team and doing OK in pre-season and the last few weeks but tonight we’ve taken a real step back,” said Carr.

“I want to look back at the game before saying too much but I don’t think our attitude was there tonight in certain areas. I thought it was in periods but not for long enough.”
