AN OVERWHELMING majority of Scots support scrapping council taxes in favour of fairer models.

Polling from Tax Justice Scotland found 83 per cent of respondents say that any reforms should produce a more equitable tax structure.

A further 63 per cent support a system based on current property values, rather than historic estimates dating back to 1991.

Green MSP Patrick Harvie branded the system “woefully outdated,” saying it “leaves councils in the lurch, struggling to pay for essential services, while unfairly taxing lots of residents.”

He said: “The public is well ahead of the politicians on this. People across Scotland want a fairer system, and they want it now.”

The Scottish Greens would “scrap the out-of-date system and replace it with a new fit-for-purpose system,” promising that households would pay less while the highest-value homes would “finally pay their fair share.”
