THE armed wing of Hamas said today that it had recovered the body of an Israeli soldier in the Shujayea neighbourhood of Gaza City.
The Qassam Brigades said the body of the unidentified soldier was expected to be handed to the Red Cross after 8pm last night.
The group reportedly crossed the ceasefire “yellow line,” unarmed, to retrieve the body following three days of digging.
It came as Israel handed over the bodies of 45 Palestinians on Monday, the Red Cross said, a day after militants returned the remains of three hostages.
Only 78 of the bodies returned so far have been identified, Gaza’s Health Ministry said.
Forensic work is being hampered by a lack of DNA testing kits, and the ministry is posting photos of remains online in the hope families will recognise them.
The Palestinian detainee shown in an alleged rape video leaked to Israel’s Channel 12 last year has also been returned to Gaza, according to documentation from the military prosecutor’s office.
The fallout from the leak has led to the resignation and arrest of the Israeli army’s top lawyer, Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, who is under investigation for allegedly allowing the footage to be released.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces arrested five Palestinian fishermen off Gaza City, the fishermen’s union said, adding that the men had been taken to an unknown location.
The Israeli army also released footage of a raid in Nablus, in the West Bank, claiming without evidence that two “Hamas operatives” were detained.
Palestinian media reported that at least eight people were arrested during the raid, including five in Beit Furik.
Rights groups say Israel is holding a record 360 Palestinian children from the occupied West Bank, many without charge or trial, in what they describe as a system of control and abuse.
Families say the detentions, marked by torture and neglect, are meant to crush Palestinian resistance.
Despite the ceasefire, Israeli attacks on Gaza continue. Last week, over 100 people, including 46 children, were killed in 24 hours.
Today, one person was killed and another wounded when an Israeli quadcopter opened fire on Gaza City’s Tuffah neighbourhood. Another was killed in Jabalia, according to al-Ahli Arab Hospital.
Gaza’s Health Ministry said the bodies of four Palestinians were brought to hospitals over the past day, including one recovered from rubble.
Since the ceasefire took effect on October 10, 2025, Israeli attacks have killed 240 people and wounded 607.
UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres voiced “deep concern” over continued ceasefire violations.
“They must stop, and all parties must abide by the decisions of the first phase of the peace agreement,” he said.
“Let’s not forget the need to establish a credible political path towards ending the occupation, realising the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people, and leading to a two-state solution that enables Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security.”
Palestinian mental health experts warned that Gaza’s residents are suffering a “volcano” of trauma after two years of bombardment.
Gaza City Mental Health Hospital head Abdallah al-Jamal said his team now treats about 100 patients daily.
“With the start of the truce, it was like a volcano erupting,” he said.
In the occupied West Bank, Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian farmers in several villages near Nablus, including Beit Dajan and al-Khader, where a family harvesting olives was assaulted and forced off its land at gunpoint.
The family was later threatened with arrest if they returned.
The attack is the latest in a wave of settler violence targeting the Palestinian olive harvest.
