Starmer backs probe into Prince Andrew’s housing

PRIME MINISTER Sir Keir Starmer agreed today that there should be “proper scrutiny” into Prince Andrew’s residency at Royal Lodge, Windsor.

The disgraced prince continues to live in the 30-room mansion, despite allegations of underage sexual abuse and renewed attention following the release of his accuser Virginia Giuffre’s posthumous memoir.

Though Prince Andrew is expected to pay for the upkeep of the estate under its terms of lease, he hasn’t paid rent since 2003.

Today, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey asked whether Sir Keir believed that MPs should “properly scrutinise the Crown Estate to ensure taxpayers’ interests are protected.”

He said: “Will the Prime Minister support a select committee inquiry, so all those involved can be called for evidence, including the current occupant?”

Sir Keir replied: “It’s important in relation to all Crown properties that there is proper scrutiny, and I certainly support that.”

Meanwhile, York Central MP Rachael Maskell introduced a law to the Commons that would allow King Charles to formally strip Andrew of his dukedom.

The prince announced that he would stop using his title on Friday, however it can only be formally removed by an act of Parliament.

Ms Maskell said: “The Duke of York title may no longer be being used by its holder, but it has not been removed.

“My short Bill, The Removal of Titles Bill, will fix this; I hope it can now be supported by Parliament.”

The Telegraph has meanwhile reported that a business deal that would have secured the duke’s income with Dutch company StartUpBootCamp was now “dead in the water.”
