Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana discuss the formation of a new leftwing party

ZARAH SULTANA and Jeremy Corbyn stood united as hundreds filled Liverpool’s grand St George’s Hall at a packed-out Your Party rally on Thursday.
Addressing the crowd, Ms Sultana emphasised the critical importance of the party’s success.
She said: “ Fascism is growling at the door, and if an election was held today, Nigel Farage would be our prime minister.
“So the stakes are too high for failure to be an option.”
She acknowledged that many felt “frustrated” about the launch process, hinting at the temporary rift sparked by the introduction of the membership portal last month, which Mr Corbyn said came from an “unauthorised” email.
Ms Sultana said that it was “regrettable” and reiterated that her motivation “has always been to strengthen our collective project.”
Later during the Q&A, Mr Corbyn added: “We don’t need any public spats, we don’t need a public disagreement. We need determination. We’re going to make this party work.”
During her speech, Ms Sultana laid out the mission ahead: “ We’re not here for lowering a few bills here and there, and the sprinkling of a wealth tax.
“We are here for a fundamental transformation of society: the means of production controlled by workers,” she said, the crowd erupting in cheers.
Addressing the growing climate of hatred and division, she added: “The rise in transphobia we’re seeing is deliberate, it is being stoked as a wider culture war designed to divide us.
“And just like with migrants, just like with Muslims, just like with disabled people, the goal is always the same: find a scapegoat so people don't look upwards at who's really holding the power.”
Taking to the stage, Mr Corbyn said: “We will be that alternative voice. We can bring unity to communities. We can make our party part and parcel of the very fabric of every community in the country.”
Lucy Williams, a Your Party councillor for Garston, noted that some might feel the faces in the crowd are all too familiar: “That’s not a weakness. It’s our greatest strength.
“In this room, we have a community that built the NHS, fought Thatcher, marched against war and genocide, against racism and injustice.
“ Our task after tonight is to take what we know and flow it to a new generation.”
